The Book Thief

Death narrated this one, kindly. The kindest unreliable narrator ever built.

She stole her first book at her brother's funeral, in the snow. Reading as survival reflex.

Papa rolled cigarettes and taught letters in the basement. The best classroom in fiction.

Max wrote on painted-over pages of Mein Kampf. Recycling has never been more literal.

The word shaker story inside the story. Words are the actual weapons, says the book about words.

Rudy's Jesse Owens race in the street. He painted himself the color the world objected to.

The dominoes at the beginning. Ordinary children playing while history stacks up.

I loved her books, Death says. The thief and the collector, both honest.

Himmel Street, translated: Heaven Street. Zusak put the joke in the address.

Carried out of it: write what the room can't take from you. Words outlast the wall.
