Normal People

They were two people who kept hurting each other with the truth. That's a genre now, thanks to Rooney.

Connell asking Marianne to come with him, the whole novel is people not asking that.

I'll go, he said. She said okay. Communication failure as a love language.

Marianne's family normalized cruelty for her. The book never says the word trauma and proves it anyway.

Connell's depression written through silence and school pickups. Best portrait of a quiet slide.

The friends' comments about her, he laughed too. Small betrayals, permanent ledgers.

In Trieste, she finally wants to live. The book lets her leave before letting her heal.

The missing therapy money scene. Class shows up in the smallest invoices.

Go on then, bring your writing. The ending is an open door, not a resolution.

Carried out of it: say the ordinary thing. It's never ordinary to the other person.
